The city's history can be traced back to the epic Mahabharata over five thousand years ago. Pandavas the heroes of the epic lived in this town known as Indraprastha and it prospered and flourished as their capital. Later Prithvi raj Chauhan the great Tomar king ruled over parts of the region known as Lal Kot. Delhi witnessed great political commotion for many centuries with the change of rule from Mughals to Khiljis, and consequently to Tughlaqs. The city gradually extended its area by including Ferozabad, Tughlabad, Shahjahanabad, and other smaller divisions. Eventually, in the early eighteenth century, Delhi came under British rule after the English shifted their capital from Calcutta to Delhi. Later after independence, the city renamed New Delhi was made the capital of India. Edwin Lutyens designed most of the important buildings of New Delhi.
